POLISH ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
Polish is the second most widely spoken language in England* and the history of Polish presence in Warwickshire is centuries-old and full of fascinating facts.
Copernicana is currently developing an oral history project designed to give first hand evidence of the life of Polish people in the Shakespeare Country during and after WWII. Our work is supported by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and University of Warwick Oral History Network.
We strongly believe that Polish immigrants have greatly enriched the British community through their strong work ethic, personal values and unique cultural heritage.
Our aim is to capture the stories of local Polish heroes and bring them to the attention of wider public to inspire and enthuse future generations. We think these stories are often universal narratives from which we can all learn about conflict and war, human resilience, integration and turning adversity into strength. This project is time sensitive and we have currently completed twelve interviews which will, once edited, present a fascinating picture of the life of first Polish immigrants both before, during WWII and after their arrival in Warwickshire. The stories will be deposited at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford upon Avon.
Once completed, this project will be presented to public though the form of an exhibition and a music concert, retelling the life of Polish immigrants in the Shakespeare Country. We hope it will also inspire other local ethnic minorities to share their stories!

Język polski jest drugim najczęściej używanym językiem na terenie Anglii, a historia Polaków w Warwickshire wielowiekowa i niezwykle ciekawa.
Copernicana pracuje w tej chwili nad projektem historii mówionych, który ma na celu przybliżyć doświadczenia i losy życiowe Polaków w Krainie Szekspira przed i po wybuchu drugiej wojny światowej. Nasze działania są wspierane przez Shakespeare Birthplace Trust oraz University of Warwick Oral History Network.
Copernicana uważa, że Polscy imigranci poprzez silną etykę pracy, system wartości i bogate dziedzictwo kulturowe, w znaczącym stopniu wzbogacili społeczność brytyjską, w której osiedli. Pragniemy uchwycić historie lokalnych bohaterów polonijnych, zwrócić uwagę szerszej publiczności na ich losy oraz zainspirować obecne i przyszłe pokolenia.
Uważamy, że nasze historie są uniwersalnymi narracjami, z których wszyscy możemy wyciągnąć lekcje na temat konfliktu i wojny, ludzkiej odporności, integracji oraz przekuwaniu niepowodzeń losu w siłę. Copernicana nagrała już dwanaście wywiadów które, po wyedytowaniu, przedstawią fascynujący obraz życia polskich imigrantów zarówno przed, w trakcie wojny oraz po przyjeździe do Warwickshire. Zebrane historie będą następnie zdepozytowane jako część archiwów w Centrum Szekspirowskim (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust) w Stratford upon Avon.
Po zakończeniu prac, projekt stanie się częścią wystawy i koncertu muzycznego, poświęconego życiu polskich imigrantów w Krianie Szekspira. Mamy również nadzieję, że zainspiruje inne lokalne mniejszości etniczne do podzielenia się swoimi historiami!
